My first week
Anyway, The 27th of July was the beginning of my new adventure! It already started in the 2 hour plane journey where I got to see the most amazing crystal clear and blue sea but also mountains and forests. Coming from Mexico City I was wearing long black leggings and a jacket. Well that all changed the second I walked out of the plane. It kind of felt like stepping into a sauna, and this feeling hasn’t stopped ever since. The first thing I thought was ‘Oh god, how am I going to survive this for 5 months’. This way of thinking hasn’t stopped but hey it’s only my first week. As soon as I could I changed into something more fresh so I didn’t feel like I was suffocating. My parents joined me during my first week to help me find an apartment. We hired a car and went looking for our hotel. I was surprised by the amount of hotels we passed. As our hotel was at the end of the ‘Zona Hotelera’ I got a good view of the touristic part of Cancun, which is HUGE. It’s a 20km (if I am not mistaken) road with the most enormous hotels on the right side and restaurants and shopping malls on the left. We passed by a spot with no hotels and there it was, the crystal clear blue sea and white beach I have been seeing on photo’s. It only lasted for 3 seconds but I was so impressed and happy! On the leftt side there were signs ‘Beware of the crocodiles’. As the other side surrounds a lagoon with well, crocs. Our hotel was located next to the lagoon. Hungry and hot we decided to have some lunch next to the lagoon where it was also very hot but we had an amazing view over the clear greenish blue lagoon, no crocs seen though! We spent that day at a shopping mall called ‘La Isla’ which was a very nice outside shopping mall with lots of colours, water and shops. Oh and a fountain to cool off. This is also where we discovered a very nice café called AH Cacao which makes lots of drinks using Mexican coffee and cacao beans. Later that day we visited two apartments but I was not really convinced.
The next day we went to a huge eco-archaeological park about an hour from Cancun. It has around 1 million visitors a year which explains the amount of visitors there. Throughout the park there were various animals like dolphins, sharks, puma’s, flamingos, turtles etc. which you could see and join activities with. Furthermore it had the most amazing crystal clear underground rivers where you could float through the plants and trees on the sides. It also had several shows that you could attend. All showing something from the ancient Mexican culture like dances, games and horse shows. The park goes all the way to the beach where you can swim but can also join some activities. I chose to do the so called ‘Sea Track’. With a group of 20 people we walked towards the sea, I happened to be the first one to enter the water. When my shoulders touched the water I got a funny weird space helmet on and got pushed down. I was completely under water but could still breathe as the helmet was filled with air. Do not really know how it worked but all I know is that when I looked down with my head my helmet got filled with water haha. They told me: ‘’When you are under water do not scream or make any heavy movements” but me being scared of fish and any other animal that has to do with the ocean I knew it was going to happen. And yep, the one time I looked down I saw a HUGE stingray literally on my feet, ooohhh just writing about it gives me chills! I screamed and moved my feet but decided I had to step up my game haha. I had to follow a metal bar under water, kind of like a walking path under water. We went up to 7 meters down which made it hard to breath but it was okay. Underwater there were several statues, really scary!!! They were halfway stuck in the sand and had their hands in the air as if they were screaming for help. I ignored those as there were 1000 fish I needed to be scared of. After a while someone threw some fish food at me and in 2 seconds I was in the middle of a 300 fish sandwich oh my god!!! I could literally only see and feel fish, and to be honest I wasn’t even scared and even wanted to touch them. This went on for about 20 minutes until we went back up. Such an amazing experience! That night there was a show for like 4000 people showing the different dances of all the states in Mexico. Also a timeline through history.
The days after were full of looking for apartments and doing stuff that had to be done. One night we went out for dinner to a restaurant called ‘Lorenzillo’s’ which was placed next to the lagoon. And guess what? Just as we were having dinner one of the waiters said with a monotone voice: ‘look’ and pointed at the lagoon. I looked next to me where a huge crocodile was swimming! Like it was nothing! Well after that we went to walk through the Cancun night life a little. One word: insane (and hot). I am curious how I am going to experience that without losing my friends or wallet hahaha. Thursday I finally found a nice apartment so Friday we could finally have a beach day! We decided to go to Playa del Carmen but because of the algae problem in the Caribbean the sea was horrible! Also to get a chair at the beach it cost you 500 pesos (30 euros). We asked a local where to go and we got send to a more hidden beach. The beach was better but the sea was full of coral and rocks and worst of all: sea urchins! But desperate for a swim we went in with our flip flops but me and my mum both fell about a hundred times and I happened to fall on a sea urchin which left me with spikes in my finger which are impossible to get rid of. After that great experience we decided to go back to Cancun where we were so happy. The beach so clean and white and the water, ooooh the water. So blue and clean and amazing. I forgot how it was to swim in a warm sea, amazing! We went to the best Italian restaurant (Cenacolo) where my parents tasted the best tiramisu ever, 20 years ago. Which I can now agree on, it was amazing. Yesterday I moved all my stuff and did groceries. My parents left to the airport and I met two other exchange students in a mall. On the way back I took the bus for the first time. It was dark and I had no idea where to get off. Luckily I am in Mexico and they do not care about bus stops. So when I saw something I recognized I pushed the button and the bus immediately stopped. I could get used to this. I had the worst night in my life sleeping as it was so hot and put the air con on and off during the whole night. I need to find out a way of working this heat because well..
Thanks for keeping up reading my first week novel haha! I am going to take my 5th shower today
P.S I still do not understand how people can wear JEANS and SWEATERS when it is 33 DEGREES 24/7.
